Rare Four-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Large Cobalt Deer Scene, Stamped "FORT EDWARD / POTTERY CO.," George Saterlee, Fort Edward, NY, circa 1859, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and semi-rounded rim, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a deer with turned head and spotted body, standing atop a heavily-shrubbed ground between a pine tree and tree stump. Cobalt-script "4.' at shoulder. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark. The subject matter, artistic quality, and size of this design are noteworthy. A 7" crack from rim on crock's left side, extending through handle. A 7 1/2" sealed crack from rim on reverse. A 2" crack from rim on reverse. A 5 1/2" Y-shaped surface line to interior of rim on reverse, not visible on exterior. A faint 4" hairline from rim on interior of reverse, 1" of which is visible on exterior. A 5" line from rim on interior of reverse, 2 1/2" of which is visible on exterior. A sealed 4 1/4" crack from rim on left side of crock's front. A small in-the-firing surface chip at base on front. A 1 1/2" x 1 3/8" flake to interior of rim. Other minor chipping to interior of rim. H 11 1/2".
