Fine and Scarce Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Deer Scene, Stamped "WHITE'S UTICA," NY State origin, circa 1865, cylindrical jar with rounded shoulder, vertical rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a large slip-trailed design of a standing deer with turned head and heavily-spotted body, flanked by a pine tree and stump. Slip-trailed cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. This example features a folkier rendering of the Norton design on which it is based. White's Utica deer are much lesser-seen than their counterparts produced in Bennington, VT and Fort Edward, NY; to date, we have only sold two different examples bearing a stamp from this pottery. This jar features crisp slip-trailing, superb color, and immaculate condition. Excellent, essentially as-made condition with minor fry to stump, two minor pings to reverse, and an in-the-firing contact mark to glaze interior. H 10 5/8".
