Fine Six-Gallon Stoneware Churn with Elaborate Cobalt Flowering Plant Decoration, Stamped "M. WOODRUFF / CORTLAND," NY State origin, circa 1867-1869, ovoid churn with tall collar, squared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a large brushed and slip-trailed design of a flowering plant bearing spotted tulips and bellflowers, emanating from a scrolled flourish. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity. Desirable size and form, strong decoration, and superb color. Several small chips to exterior of rim and a small chip to interior of rim. Wear to inner rim for lid. A 3 1/2" hairline from rim on side of churn. A very faint 5 1/2" Y-shaped surface line to underside, not visible on interior. Some typical wear to interior base from use as a churn. H 19 1/4".
