Rare Glazed Redware Ladies' Spittoon, Stamped "JOHN BELL / WAYNESBORO'," PA origin, circa 1850-1880, cylindrical form with footed base, tooled shoulder, and applied strap handle, the shoulder with carved oval opening, the top with recessed circular opening. Surface decorated with sponged manganese and covered in a clear lead glaze. Underside impressed with John Bell maker's mark. Spittoons such as this example, which were smaller and included an open handle for lifting, were termed "ladies' spittoons." While a large number of John Bell spittoons, both wheel-thrown and molded, have survived, few examples in this smaller, handled form are known. Excellent condition with a small chip and minor nick to opening in top. H 3" ; Diam. 5 1/4".
