Outstanding Large-Sized Redware Figure of a Lion, PA origin, circa 1850-1880, hand-modeled figure of a lion with slightly-turned head, open mouth, and protruding tongue, standing on an oval base. Elaborate impressed and incised details to face, mane, haunches, tail, and feet. Base with elaborate impressed and incised flowering plant design bordered by circular devices. Surface of figure and base decorated with an unusual and appealing glaze scheme of brushed manganese slip slashes under a clear lead glaze, including a manganese band around the edge of the base. Underside inscribed in pencil, "Mary Spangle / April 28 1887," likely referring to the date the lion was gifted to someone and not its date of manufacture. Desirable form, size, and glaze, featuring fine detail and a folky, surprised facial expression to the animal. Lion broken off of base and reglued to the base at its feet. Additional glued breaks to each rear leg. A flake to one ear and two smaller chips to opposite ear. A flake to tongue. L 6 3/4" ; H 6".
