Rare Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Lidded Tobacco Jar with Lynchburg, VA Advertising, Western PA origin, circa 1880, tapered jar with rounded shoulder and thin, rounded rim, featuring the stenciled cobalt advertising, "DENTAL SCOTCH SNUFF / TRADE MARK / MANUFACTURED BY / IVEY AND OWEN. / LYNCHBURG, VA. / REGISTERED IN U.S. PATENT / OFFICE. [SE]PT. 2nd. 1879." Includes Western PA salt-glazed stoneware lid, possibly original to the jar. Wear and some faintness to stenciling. Shallow chipping around inner rim for lid. A small in-the-firing ping to underside. Lid broken into two pieces and reglued, including a small reglued flake to top of lid, an in-the-firing chip to knob, and in-the-firing residue to knob. H (excluding lid) 9 3/8".
