Fine Three-Gallon Sand Mountain Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jar, attributed to Archibald McPherson, Belcher's Gap, DeKalb County, AL, circa 1865-1885, ovoid jar with flared rim and two open vertical handles, the surface covered in a mottled-green alkaline glaze with darker runs to shoulder and reverse. Potter's fingerprints visible at base. Interior with darker alkaline glaze. Decorated at the shoulder and midsection with straight incised lines flanking wavy combed incised, the rim additionally decorated with wavy combed incised below a pronounced incised line. Incised "3" at shoulder. Excellent form and glaze, featuring prolific use of the region's desirable sine-wave decoration. Essentially as-made condition with a 2" in-the-firing flake to bottom edge and a 3/8" in-the-firing chip to bottom edge, created when the jar adhered to something during the firing. Additionally a faint 1 3/4" surface line at base, continuing 5" onto underside, and an old brown paint drip near base on front. H 13 1/2".
