Extremely Rare Four-Gallon Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jar, Incised "SAMl Whe[lch]el" Samuel Whelchel, Gaffney, SC, circa 1875, ovoid jar with thin rim and applied lug handles, incised at the shoulder with the signature of Samuel Whelchel, "SAMl Whe[lch]el," partially covered by one of the applied handles. Surface covered in a grayish alkaline glaze with lighter-colored runs descending over one handle. Featuring an early-style form and attractive glaze, this jar is the first hand-signed piece of Whelchel stoneware that we have seen. Very nice condition with rim chips on reverse and two surface lines at base, measuring 3 1/2" and 2 1/4", not visible on interior. H 16".
