Six-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Freehand Cobalt Decoration, attributed to William "Leet" Hamilton, Greensboro, PA, circa 1860, cylindrical jar with incised banding, tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, brush-decorated with a large freehand flowering below two freehand stripes. Freehand "6" flanked by dashes at base. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. A large sealed crack ascending from underside on reverse, including some painted restoration to underside. A long, thin inverted T-shaped ascending from base on side of jar. A large in-the-firing rim chip on reverse, which is glazed over. A large inverted Y-shaped line ascending from base. A long horizontal hairline at base. Significant staining. H 16 1/2".
