Scarce One-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt "Goony Bird" Decoration, Stamped "CORTLAND," Madison Woodruff, possibly with Romanzo Smith, NY State origin, circa 1867-1869, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder and flared rim, decorated with a brushed and slip-trailed design of the iconic Cortland "goony bird" with crest, heavily-striped body, and solid-cobalt wing. Cobalt highlight to maker's mark. Paired with a salt-glazed lid, stamped "2," made for a two-gallon jar. Reglued pieces and cracks to shoulder/rim area. A long T-shaped crack at base, continuing onto underside. A chip to exterior of rim and small chips to interior of rim. A tiny nick to inner rim for lid. Staining to reverse. Chips to lid. H 9".
