Five-Gallon Stoneware Churn with Elaborate Flower Basket Decoration, Stamped "J. NORTON & CO. / BENNINGTON VT.," circa 1860, ovoid churn with tooled shoulder, semi-squared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a large and dramatic slip-trailed design of flowers, leaves, vines, and dotted trails emanating from a basket. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Includes salt-glazed stoneware lid, probably not original to the churn. Significant restoration to left side of churn, including a crack(?) from rim on left side of churn's front and some additional restoration to rim on left side. A tiny chip to left side of rim and interior of rim on reverse. Chips to inner rim for lid. Areas of restoration to decoration. A small surface flake and two tiny in-the-firing iron pings to shoulder area on front. A 3" diagonal hairline from rim on right side of churn. Reverse with two small surface flakes, a faint 1 3/4" Y-shaped surface line, and a faint 2 3/4" vertical surface line. Chips and several short hairlines to lid. H 18".
