Scarce Four-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Double Bird Decoration, Stamped "J. NORTON & CO / BENNINGTON VT:," circa 1860, cylindrical jug with squared spout, decorated with a slip-trailed design of two crossed birds with crests, perched on a foliate spray. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. A sealed and partially-colored crack around midsection indicates the jug was likely broken into two pieces at some point. Two additional cracks extend off from this crack, one descending vertically to underside, where it connects to a semi-circular crack along edge, including some touch-up, and a second crack ascending vertically to spout. The horizontal crack also includes a tight spider crack below and to the right of decoration. A colored 1" chip or hole to right of decoration. Small filled and colored spout chips and a few faint surface lines to spout. H 18".
