Fine Two-Gallon Stoneware Churn with Elaborate Cobalt Pheasant-on-Stump Decoration, Stamped "J. NORTON & CO. / BENNINGTON VT.," circa 1855, semi-ovoid churn with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a large slip-trailed design of a pheasant with turned head, spotted neck and body, and fanned tail, perched on tree stump flanked by shrubs. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Excellent color and unusually small size to churn. Among the better examples of a Norton single pheasant that we have offered, albeit with condition issues. A very large reglued section extending from right side of base to midsection on right side of front, across reverse and extending onto underside on left side of churn. An additional 2 7/8" oblong piece reglued to underside, including two chips to underside. A few small chips to interior of rim. H 13 1/4".
