Very Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Double Iron-Dipped Decoration, attributed to John Swann, Alexandria, VA, circa 1815, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, arched tab handles, and flared rim molding, decorated with dipped iron slip decoration to the upper and lower body. This jar is the first example of "doubly-dipped" Swann stoneware that we have ever offered. Though decorating both the upper and lower body with iron slip is a treatment common among pieces by Frederick Carpenter of Charlestown, MA during the same time period, Swann typically only decorated the upper portion of his pieces. Chips to handles and base. A small in-the-firing chip and tiny chip to interior of rim. H 12 1/2".
