Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt "Dress" Decoration, attributed to A.E. Smith & Sons, Norwalk, CT, mid 19th century, cylindrical jar with rounded shoulder and flared rim, decorated with an abstract brushed design, possibly representing a woman's dress, beside a floral motif. Based on the flower design, form, and color, this jar can firmly be attributed to A.E. Smith & Sons of Norwalk, CT. Related pieces with this form and floral design often bear the stamp, "A.E. SMITH & SONS / 38 Peck Slip / N.Y.," the New York City address in the stamp referring location of the pottery's warehouse. While the meaning of this jar's unusual design is unknown, the possibility exists that it was made for a local dressmaker. A wide top-to-bottom crack from rim on reverse, forming a Y at bottom edge of jar. A small chip to interior of rim. A glazed-over iron ping to shoulder. A few tiny nicks to inner rim for lid. Staining. H 12 1/4".
