Twelve-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Cobalt Decoration, Stenciled "Hamilton & Jones / Greensboro, PA," circa 1875, large-sized, semi-ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and semi-rounded rim, decorated with a large freehand fuchsia vine above James Hamilton maker's stenciling, surrounded by stenciled wheat, flourishes, and two stars, additionally flanked by graduated horizontal dashes. Base with stenciled "12" flanked by stenciled flourishes and graduated stripes. Freehand stripe decoration to shoulder and base. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Very nice condition with a 1" flake to end of one handle and minor surface wear. The small, glazed-over dent to rim visible in the photo occurred prior to firing. H 22".
