Rare Four-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Butterfly Decoration, Stamped "BENNINGTON," Julius Norton, Bennington, VT, circa 1840, highly-ovoid jug with tooled spout, decorated with a large brushed design of a butterfly. Rare maker's mark, reading only "BENNINGTON," below spout. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Very good condition. A recessed in-the-firing contact mark to reverse. Some mottling to clay. Two short, in-the-firing lines on underside, one of which continues 3 1/2" up base on reverse as a very faint line. Four minor base chips, two of which are glazed over. Two small, in-the-firing contact marks at base. A small in-the-firing ping to underside. Some residue from use to spout. H 17".
