Scarce Two-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jug, Stamped "BENNINGTON / FACTORY," Captain John Norton, Bennington, VT, early 19th century, ovoid jug with semi-rounded spout, decorated with a large brushed "2." Brushed cobalt highlights to maker's mark and lower handle terminal. "BENNINGTON / FACTORY" was the first maker's stamp used by the Norton family in Bennington. Relatively few pieces bearing this stamp are known. Large in-the-firing spout chip. A large salt glob and in-the-firing contact mark to left side. An in-the-firing base chip. A chip to underside at edge, possibly in-the-firing. A few in-the-firing iron pings to surface, including one to handle. Some bubbling to cobalt. H 13".
