Very Rare Diminutive Shenandoah Valley Redware Sugar Bowl with Lid, Strasburg, VA or possibly Anthony Bacher, Winchester, VA, circa 1885, ovoid form with pedestal base and applied lug handles, the surface coated in cream-colored slip, decorated with marbled manganese, and covered in a clear lead glaze. Includes original domed lid with pointed finial and matching glaze treatment. While glazed in the Bacher style, the density of the potting and aspects of the appearance of this piece suggest a Strasburg origin. Exceptional form and size, surviving in remarkable condition. Possibly made as a child's toy. Bowl in excellent condition with expected rim wear. Lid with a small edge chip, and some light edge wear (most or all of which occurred when stacked in the firing), and a tiny chip to flange on underside. H (including lid) 4 1/4" ; Diam. (at rim) 3".
