Very Rare Small-Sized Redware Jar, Stamped "J.E. SIMONS," possibly Anthony Bacher at Joseph E. Simons's Big Hunting Creek Pottery, Mechanicstown (now Thurmont), MD, circa 1881-1883, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder and flared rim, the interior coated in a lead-and-manganese glaze. Underside impressed with "J.E. SIMONS" stamp. Revered Shenandoah Valley master potter, Anthony Weis Bacher, was the primary employee at Mechanicstown's Big Hunting Creek Pottery while it was under the briefly owned by coachmaker, Joseph E. Simons. A small body of work in Bacher's style and attributed to his hand bear Simons' elusive stamp. Few marked pieces are known, and only four other examples, two unglazed jars, a glazed pitcher, and a glazed plate, have ever been offered by this auction house. Excellent condition with a 1 7/8" hairline from rim and a few minor in-the-firing stacking marks to top of rim. H 4 7/8".
