Scarce Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Incised Floral Decoration, attributed to Nicholas van Wickle, Old Bridge or Manasquan, NJ origin, circa 1825, finely-potted, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and narrow collar with tapered rim, decorated with a fine, incised-and-cobalt-highlighted design of a flowering plant with dashed blossoms and leaves. Brushed cobalt highlights to handle terminals. The first example of early New Jersey stoneware that we have offered with this design, a motif significantly rarer than the region's incised bird motifs. Very nice condition with a tight Y-shaped line on underside forming a short T at base. A few tiny chips to bottom edge of rim. A minor base chip. Water glass staining to exterior and interior. H 14".
