Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Dog's Bust, Stamped "LYONS," Thompson Harrington, Lyons, NY, circa 1860, ovoid jug with semi-rounded spout, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a dog's bust with lopped ear and stylized fur. Slip-trailed "2" above. Light cobalt accent to maker's mark. The first Harrington piece decorated in this manner that we have offered, this work shows similarity in the style of slip-trailing to other designs from this shop, including a hunter with his dog and two jugs decorated with a man's bust. All are believed to have been decorated by Thompson Harrington himself. Those featuring a man's bust are believed to be self portraits of the potter. Perhaps this jug depicts the potter's dog. Light bubbling to cobalt. A short hairline of underside connected to a long horizontal hairline to base on reverse/side. Some additional faint crazing to base area. Base chips. A 1 1/2" in-the-firing iron ping at base on front. Minor staining at base on reverse. H 14".
