Scarce Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Brown Slip Floral Decoration, Stamped "H. GLAZIER, / HUNTINGDON, PA.," circa 1831-1854, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, squared rim, and ribbed lug handles, brush-decorated on the front and reverse with a sweeping floral motif in reddish-brown slip. Additional slip highlights to handle terminals. Desirable slip color. Literature: Illustrated in Shedd, Glazier Stoneware Huntingdon, PA, p. 11. Provenance: Estate of author and historian, Nancy Shedd, Petersburg, PA. Includes Shedd's notecard inside jar, reading "Bought from John Brandwick, Wood, PA, July 18, 1978. He found it in 2 pieces on a trash heap in 'High Germany' Penn Twp." Broken into two pieces and reglued. Damage includes chips along juncture of reglued sections. A shallow 1 1/4" chip to one handle. A 1 1/4" chipped section and short crack to opposite handle. A tiny in-the-firing ping to rim. H 13 1/2".
