Scarce Five-Gallon Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jar, Incised "LJ," Lucius Jordan, Washington County, GA origin, circa 1850-1860, thin-walled, highly-ovoid jar with semi-rounded rim and thin strap handles, the surface covered in a mottled brownish alkaline glaze. Shoulder decorated with an incised wavy line below a straight incised line. Incised above with the initials, "LJ," for free African-American potter, Lucius Jordan. Unusual and appealing wide-bodied form and use of sine-wave decoration. One handle professionally restored. Otherwise excellent condition with some water glass staining to base and minor traces of old paint. H 13 1/2".
