Exceptional Three-Gallon Stoneware Pitcher with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, attributed to Richard C. Remmey, Philadelphia, PA, circa 1880, large-sized, ovoid pitcher with footed base, tooled collar, and semi-rounded rim, brush-decorated with two large tulips emanating from a stylized ground. Collar decorated with heavy swag and hanging flower decoration. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Impressed "3" on spout. One of a relatively small number of Remmey three-gallon pitchers known, this example features outstanding decoration and color. A restored 2 1/2" x 1 3/8" flake to exterior of rim on reverse. A 1 5/8" chip to top of rim. A minor rim nick. A tight spider crack extending from spout and right side of rim, including a 3 1/2" diagonal hairline from rim. A tight spider crack to underside, including a 5" vertical crack ascending from base on left side of pitcher. A 3" in-the-firing horizontal fissure near base on front. H 15 1/2".
