Very Rare Redware Whistle Incised "John Porter / P. H. / 1861," Perryopolis, PA origin, 1861, small, wheel-thrown form with carved slit on underside. Original holes in the side and top, formed while clay was still wet. Probably made by potter, John Porter, in Perryopolis, PA. No other signed examples of Porter's work are known. The initials, "P. H.," likely refer to the owner of the whistle. Relatively few signed examples of Western Pennsylvania redware are known. Wear to top and base. H 1 3/4" ; W 2 1/4".
