Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "J. SWANK & CO. / JOHNSTOWN, PA.," circa 1870, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, squared rim, and arched lug handles, brush-decorated on the front and reverse with a sweeping stem bearing open and closed tulip blossoms. Freehand cobalt 3 underscored by three dashes below one handle. Impressed below opposite handle with Swank maker's mark, underscored by three freehand dashes. Foliate brushwork to handle terminals. Provenance: Estate of author and historian, Nancy Shedd, Petersburg, PA. Three small chips to one handle. A small chip to opposite handle. Two small chips to exterior of rim. A 5/8" chip to interior of rim. A chip to molding below rim. A long crack from rim. Crazing/tight lines throughout body of jar and underside. Some fry to cobalt.
