Scarce Five-Gallon Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jar with Two-Color-Slip Floral Decoration, attributed to Collin Rhodes, Shaw's Creek, Edgefield District, SC, circa 1850, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and arched tab handles, decorated on the front and reverse with a large kaolin and iron slip floral motifs against a green, alkaline-glazed ground. Incised with five slash marks under one handle, denoting five gallons. Desirable two-color slip treatment. A 5 1/4" hairline from rim. Reverse with a thin 2" crack on underside extending 7 1/2" up body of jar. Two other short, faint lines to base area. A tiny in-the-firing ping to one handle. H 15 3/4".
