Extremely Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Incised Fox and Bird Decoration, Northeastern U.S. origin, circa 1825, highly-ovoid jug with semi-rounded spout, decorated with a folky incised design of a fox with bird perched on its back. The stylized rendering of the fox includes an angular face with whiskers, bushy tail, large claws, and profuse impressed circles throughout. The script initials, "NL," appear below, composed of a impressed circles. Cobalt accents to incised and impressed decoration. Cobalt highlights to capacity mark and handle terminals. Highly unusual figural design. Excellent condition with a minor base chip and a shallow in-the-firing spout chip. H 13".
