Large-Sized Redware Plate with Elaborate Yellow-Slip Bird Decoration, Matawan, New Jersey origin, circa 1840, with coggled edge, the lead-glazed interior decorated in slip-trailed yellow slip with a long-tailed bird perched on a leafy branch surrounded by wavy, spotted, and curved trails. The inclusion of large and varied slip-trailed designs around the bird is unusual, this work being the most heavily-decorated Matawan bird plate that we have offered. Typical light wear to interior surface. A 4 1/2" crack from edge. A few rim chips. Diam. 13 1/4".
