Four-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Double Bird Decoration, attributed to S. Hart, Fulton, NY, circa 1860, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-squared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of crossed birds with spotted bodies, atop a looping flourish. Cobalt-script "4" to the left. Includes a fitting salt-and-Albany-slip-glazed lid, possibly original to the crock. Exceptionally strong cobalt. A crack across underside, forming a very long T at base of crock. Light exfoliation to front shoulder. A 3/4" chip and minor chip to interior of rim. A 1" glazed-over surface chip to reverse. A 1" surface line from rim. A 5" vertical in-the-firing line to interior, not visible on exterior. Several chips to lid. H (excluding lid) 10 3/4".
