Very Rare Slip-Decorated Redware Loaf Dish, Inscribed "Cheap as Mud.," attributed to the Smith Pottery, Norwalk CT, second quarter 19th century, rectangular form with rounded corners and coggled edge, the lead-glazed interior lavishly-decorated with the inscription, "Cheap / as Mud.," within a border of wavy lines. Among the best examples of Norwalk slipware that we have ever offered, this dish's humorous slogan touted the affordability of locally-made earthenware. Its saying, bold in its rhetoric, is equally powerful in its use as a decorative element- executed in large, bright script on a sizeable platter. This work may have been used as a ceramic trade sign of sorts, displayed in the window of the Smith pottery or local merchant. Provenance: Ex-Sotheby's; includes auction sticker on underside. From a recently-surfaced CA collection. Very nice condition with a thin 4 1/2" crack from edge, small chips to rim, and minor chipping to reverse of rim. Slip-decorated interior survives in strong condition with minor surface wear and only a small flake and minor fleck of glaze loss. Dimensions: 15 3/4" x 12" x 2 5/8".
