Exceptional Five-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "A.O. WHITTEMORE / HAVANA, N.Y.," circa 1870, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a flower with cross-hatched center, scalloped petals and leaves, and heavy striping and spotting throughout. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Among the finest Whittemore floral motifs that we have offered. A large Y-shaped crack on underside, forming a 3 3/4" inverted Y at base on reverse. Significant restoration to left of decoration and below decoration, possibly serving to cover an extension of the crack on the underside. A 2 1/2" inverted Y-shaped surface line above one handle, which occurred in the firing. A 1 3/8" surface line from rim on reverse, probably in-the-firing. Minor bubbling to cobalt. H 12 1/2".
