Outstanding Six-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Bird-on-Flower Decoration, Stamped "JOHN BURGER / ROCHESTER," N.Y. State origin, circa 1860, large-sized, cylindrical crock with rounded rim and applied lug handles, decorated with a large and artistic slip-trailed design of a bird perched on the blossom of a daisy plant. Elaborate detail throughout, characteristic of Burger's work, including heavy striping to the bird's head and neck, spotting to the bird's belly, and spotted and stripe embellishments to the flowering plant below. Design measures an imposing 11" tall by 10 3/4" wide, along the horizontal curve of the vessel. Cobalt highlight to maker's mark. John Burger is regarded as the premiere decorator in 19th century American stoneware and this large-sized work showcases his proficiency at both avian and floral motifs. Significant restoration throughout, including areas of painted restoration to decoration. Restoration paint covering one handle, the extent of the restoration to this handle being unknown. H 14 7/8".
