Scarce Three-Gallon Open-Handled Stoneware Jar with Impressed "J.F." Cartouches, Jonathan Fenton, Boston, MA, late 18th century, ovoid jar with footed base, heavily-tooled collar, and open loop handles, decorated on the front and reverse with an impressed and cobalt-highlighted cartouche featuring the script initials of Jonathan Fenton, "J.F.," within a rope border. Brushed cobalt highlights to handle terminals. A lesser-seen Fenton motif, significantly rarer than his well-known floral and fish designs. Two rim chips, measuring 1 3/8" and 1 1/8". A 1 3/4" section of shallow in-the-firing chipping to rim. Minor chipping to interior of rim. A restored 2 1/4" x 5/8" section to exterior base. Additional heavy chipping to base, some of which is glazed over. In-the-firing kiln furniture residue to one side. A 3 3/8" crack on underside, continuing 7 3/8" up one side, forming an inverted U. H 13 1/4".
