Extremely Rare Six-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Brushed Foliate Decoration, Inscribed "R. Remmey," Richard Clinton Remmey, Philadelphia, PA, circa 1875, large-sized, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, squared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated on the front and reverse with three large brushed cobalt leaves. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals and foliate brushwork below each handle. Underside faintly-incised with the script signature, "R. R[e]mmey," for the renowned Philadelphia potter and pottery owner, Richard Clinton Remmey (1835-1904). One of a few examples of stoneware known bearing the signature of Remmey, today regarded as one of the most famous and prolific 19th century American potters. Very nice condition with a 1" chip to side of rim and a minor nick to opposite side of rim. H 16 3/4".
