Fine and Rare Three-Gallon Open-Handled Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "H. GLAZIER. / HUNTINGDON PA," circa 1831-1854, ovoid jar with tall collar, ribbed strap handle, and thin rim, decorated on the front and reverse with a brushed tulip flanked by wreath-like foliate designs. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Desirable maker's mark and exceptional form. Literature: Illustrated in Made of Mud, Stoneware Potteries in Central PA 1831-1929, p. 18. Provenance: Estate of author and historian, Nancy Shedd, Petersburg, PA; purchased by Shedd at Patton's Antique Shop, Duncansville, PA, Sept. 1972; Shedd's notes indicate it came from the Albert Swank collection. A 1 3/8" rim chip and 1 1/4" rim chip. A 2 1/4" hairline from rim. A matte glaze drip on reverse. A 1 3/4" base chip with a tight series of cracks emanating from it, including one that extends 7" up reverse and another that runs partway along base on underside. A 2" in-the-firing flake to one handle. H 14 1/2".
