Very Rare Large-Sized Stoneware Canning Jar with Incised Compass Decoration, Western PA origin, circa 1875, tapered jar with tooling to midsection and shoulder and semi-rounded "wax sealer" rim, decorated with an incised and cobalt-highlighted floral motif executed with a compass. Front further decorated with five freehand cobalt stripes. The first Western Pennsylvania canning jar that we have offered featuring this decorative technique. A thin 5 1/4" crack on underside near edge, with a 2 1/2" Y-shaped line extending off from it. This crack continues 3 1/2" diagonally onto base. A tiny chip to inner wax sealer rim. A 5/8" base chip with adjacent tiny chip. Light staining. H 9 5/8".
