Very Rare Two-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Political Jar, Inscribed "Grant / & / Colfax," attributed to the Porter Family, Oil Creek, Venango County, PA, 1868, ovoid jar with tall collar and applied lug handles, featuring the brushed cobalt inscription, "Grant / & / Colfax," applied over slip-coated clay. Underscored cobalt-script "2," at shoulder. This jar was made in support of the victorious Republican ticket of Ulysses S. Grant and Schuyler Colfax in the Presidential Election of 1868. Relatively few American stoneware political pieces with presidential inscriptions have survived. Western Pennsylvania examples such as this jar are virtually non-existent. A 5" hairline from rim on front. Two other long hairlines below each handle. Minor in-the-firing chipping to underside. H 11 1/2".
