Outstanding Molded Stoneware Advertising Vase with Relief Decoration of Bottles, Embossed "DOWNER & HOWARD / ALE / and / PORTER," attributed to the White's Pottery, Utica, NY, circa 1890, cylindrical form with high-relief decoration of crossed beer bottles below the embossed advertising, "DOWNER & HOWARD / ALE / and / PORTER." Bottles impressed "DOWNER & HOWARD, / BREWERS. / ERIE, PA," and "THIS BOTTLE / IS NEVER SOLD." Relief hops and wheat motifs to front and reverse. Shoulder with relief mask and vine motifs. Salt-glazed surface with cobalt, copper, and brown slip highlights throughout. The finest example of Whites Utica stoneware that we have ever offered. Excellent condition with minor staining and faint crazing to underside, not visible on interior. H 15".
