Five-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Chicken Pecking Corn Decoration, probably Riedinger & Caire, Poughkeepsie, NY, circa 1870, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-squared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a large slip-trailed design of a chicken pecking kernels of corn from a heavily-decorated ground with shrubs. Some fry to cobalt. An in-the-firing iron ping to front of rim. Blotches of staining throughout. A 3 1/2" Y-shaped surface line below right handle, not visible on interior. A very faint 3" vertical surface line below one handle, not visible on interior. A small flake to rim on reverse. A small in-the-firing ping to base on right side of crock. A few small rim chips. Minor traces of old gray paint to one handle. H 12 1/4".
