Three-Gallon Stoneware Churn with Cobalt Pheasant-on-Stump Decoration, Stamped "J A & C W UNDERWOOD / FORT EDWARD, N.Y.," circa 1865-1867, semi-ovoid churn with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and tall collar with semi-squared rim, decorated with a large slip-trailed design of a crested pheasant with turned head, perched on a tree stump flanked by shrubs. Light cobalt accents to maker's mark and capacity mark. Includes salt-glazed stoneware lid that was not made for use on a churn, and does not fit well. A 7/8" rim chip. Wear to inner rim for lid. Spots of fry to cobalt. Two in-the-firing iron pings. Some staining. A short surface crack to rim on reverse. Lid in excellent condition. H 15".
