Rare Three-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Incised Bird Decoration, attributed to Nicholas van Wickle, Manasquan, NJ origin, circa 1830, ovoid jug with tooled shoulder and squared spout, decorated with a large incised design of a bird perched on a branch. Unusual spotted cobalt decoration to bird, along with a stripe to its neck and cobalt highlights to the tail and branch. Eye formed from an impressed screw head. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Very nice condition with a 6" diagonal hairline to midsection on left side of jug, a faint line to underside, minor spout and base nicks, and a minor glazed-over, in-the-firing surface fissure to left side at midsection, measuring 1 1/8". H 15 1/2".
