Rare Half-Gallon Stoneware Pitcher with Cobalt Leaf Decoration, attributed to Samuel I. Irvine, Newville, PA, circa 1865, ovoid pitcher with footed base and tooled collar, decorated with a brushed leaf extending diagonally across the front. Swag decoration to sides of collar and flanking the spout. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. A rare decoration and unusual form for this maker. Two base chips and a minor base nick. A chip to side of rim. A small, shallow chip to side of handle. A minor, in-the-firing contact mark to side of pitcher at base of collar. Some light wear to leaf design. H 8 3/4".
