Five-Gallon Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jar, Inscribed "Lm / Aug 1. 1855," David Drake at Lewis Miles' Stony Bluff Manufactory, Horse Creek Valley, Edgefield District, SC, 1855, ovoid jar with semi-rounded rim and arched lug handles, the surface covered in a colorful alkaline glaze in shades of brown with rarely-seen, lighter-colored spotting throughout. Heavy olive runs descending from the shoulder. Shoulder incised the initials, "Lm," for Lewis Miles, along with the date, "aug 1. 1855." Two slash marks and three punctates are additionally incised at the shoulder. A beautifully-glazed example of Dave's work including desirable date and "Lm" inscriptions. A 3/4" hole in underside, leading to a larger flake on interior. Exfoliation to interior. A 1 1/2" chipped section to one handle. A 1" chip and glazed-over line to opposite handle. A 3 1/4" flake to front of rim. A small shallow rim chip on reverse. Network of cracks, mostly tight, to bottom half of jar. A few base chips. H 14 1/4".
