Rare and Fine One-Gallon Vertical-Handled Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Watch Spring Decoration, Manhattan, NY or Cheesequake, NJ, third quarter 18th century, ovoid jar with footed base, heavily-tooled shoulder, and open vertical handles, decorated on the front and reverse with a slip-trailed "watch spring" motif. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals with additional watch spring decoration emanating from the lower terminals. Excellent form with classic, early-period decoration. One handle reglued. A 3" fork-shaped hairline from rim. Three chips to exterior of rim, the largest measuring 1". Two in-the-firing contact marks to surface, each with adhered clay residue. Some minor surface lines to interior of rim, not visible on exterior. H 8 1/4".
