Scarce and Fine Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Two-Sided Incised Bird Decoration, Manhattan, NY or NJ origin, circa 1800, ovoid jar with narrow, footed base, tooled shoulder, and open loop handles, decorated on the front and reverse with an incised and cobalt-highlighted design of a bird with paddle-shaped tail, perched on a stylized branch. The design includes an impressed circular eye to the bird and, on one side, wavy lines accenting the tail. Brushed cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Strong decoration, elegant form, and exceptional color. A 4 3/4" in-the-firing vertical surface crack to interior, visible as a slightly recessed area on exterior. An in-the-firing contact mark to same side, below incised bird. A circular in-the-firing contact mark to opposite side, behind bird. In-the-firing residue to base. Shallow glazed-over chipping to base. A small Y-shaped surface line to underside. H 11 1/4".
