Scarce Three-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Standing Deer Decoration, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON. / BENNINGTON, VT," circa 1855, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a stag with turned head and spotted body, standing on a well-detailed ground between a pine tree and split-rail fence. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Restoration to much of rim. Restoration to right side of crock including handle. An approximately 2" hairline above left handle. A short line at base on side of crock, continuing 2 1/2" onto underside. A small chip to underside and a few minor nicks to underside. H 10 1/2".
