Fine Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jar, Stamped "D S," Daniel Seagle, Vale, NC, circa 1840, rotund jar with thin, semi-rounded rim and arched lug handles, the surface covered in a glossy green alkaline glaze. Impressed "D S" on one handle and "5" on the opposite handle. This jar's wonderful form exemplifies Seagle's mastery of the potter's craft. A 1 3/4" flake to end of one handle. A faint hairline descending from rim, which curves to the left and stops directly below the handle stamped "5." A 4 1/2" hairline from rim on opposite side of jar. A 2" flake on interior, leading to an old repair in the form of a filled 5/8" hole on exterior. Some typical minor surface wear. H 14".
