Rare Rockingham Presentation Frog Pitcher with Cameo Bust, attributed to Swan Hill Pottery, South Amboy, NJ, late 19th century, molded pitcher with twig-form handle featuring relief decoration of horsemen and hounds taking down a stag, further decorated above with grapevines and below with leaves. Surface covered in a streaky, reddish-brown Rockingham glaze with white-glazed interior. Front decorated in white clay with a molded and applied classical man's bust above the name, "F.E / NORRIS." Interior decorated with a molded and applied figure of a frog, executed in yellowish clay and decorated in blue and brown. This pitcher is the first that we have seen from New Jersey featuring applied decoration above the presentation name. Underside impressed with a faint rectangular stamp, possibly a maker's mark. A few minor handle chips. A 3/4" surface line to interior of rim, not visible on interior. A few small chips to interior of rim and one minor chip to exterior of rim. H 9 3/8".
